The Aloha State is a land of welcoming spirit, waves, volcanoes, and rainforests. A former kingdom that has become a burgeoning economic force in the Pacific: this is Hawaii, whose future shows great promise as a life sciences hub.

Over 1.2 million people make Hawaii the 42nd most populous state. Major cities include the state capital Honolulu, with a population of over 370,000, Hilo, Kailua, Kaneohe, and Waipahu. Geography & Climate

Located in the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii is the only island state of the United States, and is the world’s longest island chain at 1,523 miles (2451 kilometers) in length. The Aloha State is also the southernmost state and the only state lying within the tropics.

History

Hawaii prides itself on its rich cultural heritage and interesting history. Polynesians arrived on the Big Island of Hawaii nearly 2,000 years ago. Tahitians arrived later, enriching the islands with their own cultural and religious systems. Warring native kings ruled the islands until after the arrival of Europeans.
