My wife and I just went to O’ahu for several days to tour the whole island looking at real estate and the surrounding neighborhoods. We especially love the leeward side and are particularly drawn to the Ewa Beach area. Right now, living in Japan, we would qualify as first-time homebuyers since we haven’t yet owned a condo in the US, which would especially help us get our foot into the door (or, should I say, sand).

As a mainlander, I am thinking of moving to Kauai. The HOAs here on the mainland are a deal breaker. I was flabbergasted by some of the HOA fees. But knowing what is behind those fees makes sense now. I can also properly look at my costs to more accurately figure out what I can purchase.

Maybe it was the weather, or maybe it was the people, or maybe it was both! And those gorgeous mountains still haunt my dreams.

I just did a quick search and the prices seem to be all over the place. My recommendation would be to call a transport service. If you fill out one of those instant quotes online, you’ll probably start getting harassed by telemarketers. Not sure if you need your specific car. You may want to consider comparing the cost of purchasing a car out on the islands rather than shipping a car here. It really depends on the reason. If it purely for transportation, you may not need the same type of car. You don’t tend to drive the distance or speed you would in other places. The 2 major shipping companies for automobiles are Pasha and Matson. It looks like Pasha doesn’t service Alaska, so maybe start with Matson.

Hey Chris – Thanks so much for catching that! You’re absolutely right about AirBnBs not being legal in Kailua or most of Oahu. I definitely used that term incorrectly in the article and have fixed it.
Just to be clear though – I actually do live in Kailua! My place in Aikahi used to be a vacation rental before the regulations changed. If you’re curious about the current short-term rental situation on Oahu, the Department of Planning and Permitting has a really helpful FAQ page that breaks it all down (https://www8.honolulu.gov/dpp/permitting/str/str-faq/). These days, short-term rentals are pretty much limited to resort areas only.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for the additional info and your take on Hawaii Healthcare. My personal experience and that of my family here in Hawaii has been very positive. I’ve lived on both Oahu and The Big Island. That said, I can see it being difficult to manage a serious medical condition. The more specialized care tends to be on Oahu and the outer islands air lift patients or you have to do an island hop flight into Oahu for appointments. A challenge, among a few, that come with living on these remote islands in the middle of the Pacific. We’re shining light on your options out here from local resident’s perspective.

It’s sad to see. I’m not entirely sure how to handle these scenarios, but we need to do better. As you mentioned, it’s hard to help people that don’t want help or aren’t capable of receiving it. Especially when the addiction and resulting changes in the person get so far along.

They tailgate worse than Cali. The landlords have set the market price for rents, with no rent control it’s doomed…and after 16 years my apt I first rented doubled in rent and shrunk in size. There’s slumlords galore, illegal rentals, greedy greedy people who are entitled trustafarians, who want renters to pay more than the mortgage. While they slum lord. The people won’t give you a living wage, even if you’re a dr. Because they own the business and you’re screwed if you don’t make at least 6k a month. Most People here are meth heads, crack heads, drunks, addicted to cigs, and gambling, because they’re so bored. Most guys live at their moms, and are losers with no drive in life. They drive lifted trucks, with mega tires, and basically try to run you off the road. Gas is expensive, food is five hundred dollars for two bags. They hunt pigs and think it’s so cool to stab and shoot an animal. While you get to listen to the dogs barking all night, and the blood curling screams in your back yard, while trying to sleep through an animals worst day ever.

Connections are literally fried if caught too late gone for good!. These connections give you skills like riding a bicycle or roller skating.etc as your brain picks up new ways to do things.

There used to be seminars where they’d have slideshows of ‘This is your brain! This is your brain on drugs!” showing how much damage what once was even a modest amount of drugs in your system for long term can do and this was back in the 70s/80s drugs are MUCH stronger now and harder to get off of if you are ready to try and live a clean life. For many it literally takes an act of God to help them thru as they realize it’s impossible on their own convictions.

You look on the streets and a lot of them will continuously to pull up their pants over and over unable to do so and poop all over the place even when a public bathrooms are nearby. Eventually they too had to be locked up at night to prevent you guessed it…………vandalism!

The crime on drugs lets them out of jail before they have any treatment for addiction so they often aren’t even aware they have that problem! They are let out into the wild to roam the streets where a good chunk of the cases if caught early could be nipped in the bud before they grow too old to where it almost doesn’t matter anymore. The sad thing is usually 1 of 2 things happens. They either die in the streets or die in jail unable to care for themselves as they are that far gone.

The truth is much more complicated, and omits the reality that many recent residents actually return to the continent for medical care because the resources in Hawaiʻi are so limited. There is a chronic shortage of healthcare professionals on all of the islands, not only of specialists, but family service physicians, nurses, and medical support staff. A major reason for the shortage is the extremely high cost of living: even physicians have a hard time making ends meet, so those who do come to practice here don’t stay. Anyone with a serious medical condition that requires high level care would be ill-advised to move here. Come for a vacation, but go back home to where your needs can be met.

Aloha Peter, I’m Lei and I used to listen to you on the radio here in Honolulu probably on Rick Hamada’s show long ago & recently wondering where you are?Anyway,I’m a kamaaina22 living in beautiful Kailua for decades. All my siblings except 2 (out of 9) live here. We are not wealthy but learned to adapt from childhood being frugal, growing veggies and eating homegrown fruits much like today. Neighbors help and share kindness with each other. There’s no abusiveness. Most of us are of mixed ethnicity; my ‘Ohana also still live in these islands a beautiful place we call “home”. Yes it can be costly but there’s “no place like Hawaii”
Aloha…

Comment on Can I live in Hawaii? It’s easy now: take the quiz! by Bettie Wylie https://www.livinginhawaii.com/hawaii-nei/living-in/can-live-hawaii-easy-now-take-quiz/#comment-215442 Tue, 23 Jul 2024 02:07:16 +0000 https://www.livinginhawaii.com/?p=12079#comment-215442 Aloha Peter. Bettie is here. Don’t forget to send me your solid program that helps people move to Hawaii AND get good jobs. I am a retiree but I don’t mind using my craft still. I am a 43 years veteran in the Barbering field, and a 2009 Computer Technician. Need entry level Technology, but currently licensed by St. of MD as a Licensed Master Barber Stylist & Hair Designer, specializing in Men & Boys. Do you think something would be available somewhere for me in Hawaii? I’d sure like to know! Also, I graduated 2000, from the ‘Aquatics, as a Swimming Pool & Spa Operator. I have more but these two are the ones I favor the most & good at.

Last but not least, I am also eligible for income-based housing assistance programs, but I use my skills and education to supplement my ssa fixed income. I am allowed to make more money, but the senior living allows me to afford the rent! I may ‘Want or need more income’, but I am eligible for many programs, food supplements and more. Right now I have retired in a ‘Senior Independent Living facility here in Maryland’, but I Am allowed to work, at least part-time. I do have a few health problems, but I am Spunky, Energetic, Outgoing, Motivated, Educated and a professional mindset-individual, with a great sense of humor and a outstanding demeanor. I believe I can make it anywhere in this world, if I can escape Tornadoes, Hurricanes and Creeping Lava :-) .

So Peter, please tell me more about the programs there, of any part of Hawaii Islands, mainlands, etc… that may fit my character, education and/or skills needed for such jobs, and living (income-based living for seniors, would be great to learn more about).

I didn’t check your Videos yet but I am about to, and thank you so much Peter for your time and for sharing this information with everyone!

(Website may still be under construction) – You may test it anyway if you like!

My late husband and I did our 25th Wedding Anniversary/Honeymoon on both Oahu then on the Big Island in Aug 2017.

The Big Island “talked” to me and we began to make plans to move there by 2020.

COVID-19 hit and Dan had two covid-related strokes then died 18 months later.

My cousin moved in with me afterwards and we’re making plans to see the Big Island sometime.

Congrats to you and your girlfriend for getting some land and building a home there!

Maybe someday we’ll get to meet up and share some coffee

We conversed briefly before. I never had a burning desire to move to Hawaii but interestingly enough after taking the quiz, and answering truthfully, it’s telling me I should head straight there and never look back. I am quite surprised. I currently reside in Southern California, and I am a chemical engineer by trade & own a tiny two bedroom condo that cost me an arm and a leg. Maybe it’s got something to do with already having the sticker shock from SoCal living, the fact my significant other happens to be non Caucasian, and that I live in the part of SoCal near Malibu bc I LOVE hiking every weekend.

We bought a condo on Maui in 2015, shipped our 6 month old car and only slightly too much stuff, and moved here. My ancestors came to the islands in the 1800’s (sugar, not missionaries & definitely not big money). We have no surviving family here now (that I know of) and two grown sons on the mainland.

We’ve made friends and enjoy the lifestyle immensely. I found the biggest adjustment was always thinking of family and friends in the evening when it was too late to call them. We travel internationally about twice a year, so “rock fever” has never been a problem, and the kids visit US. Yes, it’s expensive, but when you weigh the things you don’t need – warm clothes & boots, snow tires & heat – against the prices of gas, electricity, etc., things balance out pretty well. Especially by calling white people Haoles. The mainland is all races. All cities across the country have a housing shortage, not just Hawaii. Stop thinking you are special. When I lived there all the locals I knew owned homes! Every single one of them had homes as well as their extended family. I had to live in a tiny 300 Sq ft Ohana scraping by. Stop blaming your cost and issues on The Mainland. Should we refuse residents of Hawaii entry into the mainland due to cost? Vegas one-bedroom apartments in a livable area with less crime are now at $1500-$2000 a month. It’s everywhere.

So the illegal and random fireworks has a major and negative impact. Fireworks going off from 1 pm to 1 am is not a good thing. It needs to be continued and not going on for hours all over O’ahu.
I have no issue with cites doing fireworks in a controlled way for a specific period of time.
Also many houses are close together here and the fire hazard is real. Especially with current dry and drought impacted vegetation.

I do however enjoy all the joy and celebrating done for new years eve. In this seemingly interminable age if destruction and corruption, our minds are constantly burdened down by fear on all fronts and it does the heart good to spend some time enjoying special celebrations here in Hawaii. If the government were wise they would offer free classes on the proper handling of fireworks safely and then leave the people alone to enjoy them. Mahalo for allowing us to share our thoughts.

One of the things I miss about Hawaii is the culture. I miss the cultural diversity a lot. My parents moved to a small town in California where almost everyone is white, and it really lacks the aloha spirit. I learned a little Hawaiian when I went to Benjamin Parker Elementary, so I’m still somewhat capable of being able to pronounce words correctly. Most beautiful place on earth. Not sure what I’m still doing in this gloomy California town. If I could only find a solid career path there, then I would probably move.

I loved many things about the culture and the island itself, some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. None of the three things you listed gave me culture shock, but then again I am from NYC and grew up around so many cultures, married into an eastern culture as well. However overall I didn’t want to stay in Hawai’i because of the homelessness. There is a huge drug problem and lots of corruption in the government. It’s wonderful to practice Aloha, but being a New Yorker, I had a lot of trouble adjusting to the passive nature that looked away from a lot of society’s ails.

I was in Hawaii a few times and the last few times I noticed that there are many “hiring” signs everywhere you go with some employers even offering “bonuses”. I have never seen this before. I am Canadian and have always wanted to make Hawaii my home. As most of us can agree, there’s something magical about the Hawaiian Islands.
I have looked into getting a work visa, applied for jobs (online), and got interviews and even though I was successful in the interview process, most employers will not process working visas on your behalf. Now, my question will be, if employers are not willing to process work visas, then what would be the best way to do this? I reached out to a lawyer here in Kelowna who told me to either finish my degree (I’m a 2nd-year student) or if I had at least 200K, to basically give it to him, he’ll set up a sort of trust account and then he’ll use that money to set up a business in the US on my behalf and then after a few months, he would apply for a work visa for me. Though, I think if I had 200K lying around, I would not see myself in this predicament.
If I were to move to Hawaii, I would work as much as I can as this would be the only way for me to make it, financially I mean. I don’t mind working a lot, I am already a workaholic here and love it. Any suggestions that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Many fail to remember that our air is far less polluted today than when I was a child over 70 years ago.
As a scientist, I am aware of Diesel engines that emit exhaust that is actually cleaner and less polluted after combustion than it was before it entered the engine!!
If climate alarmists were truly concerned about CO2 emissions, why are they so apposed to thorium generated nuclear energy which is the produces no “carbon footprint” to use Al Gore’s terminology??
Solar farms fry thousand of birds and other animals on an annual basis but we do not hear a peep from the so-called environmentalists, likewise, wind farms kill thousands upon thousands of bats and birds, but again not a peep from these individuals!! An exemption for the killing of the American Bald Eagle by wind turbines was granted by the Obama administration allowing eagles killed from wind farms to go unpunished, while a hunter accidentally killing one of the birds will be heavily fined and may even be subjected to jail time.
Why is there no media coverage or concern expressed by leftist politicians about declining bat populations and endangered species on this? Because it does not fit the actual agenda!
Why is there no concern about China using dirty coal rather than United States mined coal and opening a new coal powered power plant nearly every week?
Why did the great environmentalist Barack Obama buy beachfront property in Marthas Vineyard and in Hawaii if he actually believed his own rhetoric? Why are numerous other billionaire climate alarmists buying expensive beachfront property?
Why is there no coverage of the beneficial effects of a warming climate? – Opening of the Northwest Passage year around for sea travel and trade; Alaska would become the bread basket of the world if it had a warmer climate and a longer growing season – have you ever seen the size of cabbages and other vegetable grown in Alaska because of the long daylight hours? Also, reduce the impact of regional and global cooling resulting from a major volcanic eruption – when a large volcano even 1/4 the size of the Yellowstone Volcano will cause sufficient cooling of the environment to cause major crop shortage and failure resulting in major famines.
Personally, I am far more worried about a major electromagnetic pulse event produced by a large solar storm arising from our Sun or a human-produced high altitude nuclear burst on the East and West coast. Regardless of the cause, the United States would be depopulated in a matter of days and weeks with the only survivors living in isolated primitive conditions.
The United States and Western World would be better served by expending its resources on producing clean nuclear energy and protecting our power grid and computer networks from electromagnetic interference and sabotage than the useless effort of trying to prevent climate change.

So thankful for all the different tropical fruits we have available to us. We are blessed with apple bananas, mangos and coconuts that our friends share with us. We love shopping for papayas and guava at the Farner’s Markets here. Such an abundance of fresh fruits and veggies and perfect weather. Talk about island blessings!

Comment on Top 3 reasons why you might think Hawaii locals in Hawaii are rude to you by LoveoftheEarth https://www.livinginhawaii.com/living-in-hawaii/hawaiis-island-culture/are-locals-in-hawaii-rude/#comment-215135 Tue, 12 Sep 2023 22:43:37 +0000 https://www.livinginhawaii.com/?page_id=12728#comment-215135 In reply to Mitchell W..

Speaking from a brown man. This us not only done to white people. I whole heartedly agree with what you said except that point. Seriously “locals” grt over yourselves. You don’t own anything. It’s not your land. And wake up and educate yourselves. The state lacks fundamental education and common sense. I don’t want to say this about all the locals because there are some good ones. But most of them have jumped ship and work at the tourist destinations. If you want to get away from the tourism you’ll probably run into 1 or 2 humans who look and act like disgusting pigs. Don’t let that ruin your vacation like it did mine. Luckily there’s a lot more good than bad out there. But there seriously needs to be some education added to this state because you can see where it’s clearly lacking. Anybody who thinks they’re better or more entitled because they’ve been living somewhere longer than you have is a complete moron. For some reason this happens at a lot of beach towns all over the globe!

Having served a 20-year military career as a soldier/firefighter and prior to that, a firefighter in my hometown, any one I knew in the business would have activated those sirens without fail. I also worked at an EOC (Emergency Operations Center). Saving lives was the top and only mission! To imply that the people of Maui and Lahaina would’t have known the difference between a fire and a tsunami is an insult to their intelligence. It saddens me that people died due an individual who was not suitably qualified or properly trained for that position. I went through several tsunami warnings when I lived on Oahu, and as I can recall, had plenty of warning.

I am an introvert, quiet, reserved, humble, hard worker, mind my own business. And white. I would walk into restaurants and get the evil eye just for being white. Was bullied out of a job because I was white. Watched blacks get bullied out too. This is all crap. Hawaiians and others non-white are just plain mean and use “mainland behavior” as an excuse to be evil. Repent and follow Jesus, racist Hawaiians.

SHE created an Amazon “wish list” – just like a bridal registry – and then sent that link to all relatives. This way, all her family would be able to pick items that she DID need and, even better, could see when “that eggbeater”, etc., already had been donated so that she wouldn’t end up with, for example, a dozen crockpots.
Now, this kind of personal assistance is beneficial only for those who have direct connections with fire victims rather than the public at large, but I hope this can be of benefit to some.

Working on what we did for another aunt who lost all in that suburban Colorado wildfire three years ago, we are considering sending each of the households Costco cash cards for $_____. That way, it would not be we who decided what to provide, but they could obtain precisely what is necessary. BUT…..in that Maui’s Costco is over in Kahului and, like so many Lahainians, they have lost every one of their vehicles, does anyone know if there is some kind of service or transport created to help fire victims access to Kahului, etc.?

And mahalo for dedicating a special show to Lahaina. Each day the news is more horrific and tragic – unimaginable suffering and loss. I’d like to propose something different for your show this Friday. More uplifting. Have each viewer share one or more of their favorite Lahaina memories. Our collective memories and photos are all we have left after the devastating fires. We should remember, cherish and honor Lahaina for its rich history, its unique charm and iconic Hawaii vibe and not the burned out buildings and wrecks the news is bombarding us with. Just a thought.

I agree with the person who said #4:Hawaiians are rude sometimes. Doubtful any of them are as “Hawaiian” as they think they are..just someone whose family is from here, they were born here.. I have had so many negative experiences here, I have never, in my life experienced the same stink attitude from a collection of people. It’s usually just small things, a very snotty cashier, a blatantly rude brown person (it is what is is guys) in the line to a movie. The part that really annoys me, is when they will say “we just seem rude because you don’t understand our culture” and make it seem like your fault. We ALL know what rude behavior is. Whether we can recite King Kamehamehas birthday or not shouldn’t matter in them treating us with what they so famously claim IS their culture, and that is aloha. Aloha isn’t some big special love fest. It’s being a decent person, simple. Practice what you preach locals. Without the outside world, you would die. Nothing from the past, as far as the US making Hawaii a state involves you. PERIOD. Your land was never taken. You have been robbed of nothing. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Hawaii has nothing other than scenery..tourism’s
ALL you got guys. White people, Japanese, Chinese have brought you everything you have.

Shell Stokes, my wife an I have an inter-racial, international marriage of 49-plus years. My wife was born in North Korea and lived in Busan Korea after leaving the refugee camp on Koji Island (Goejido). We were married in S. Korea in 1973 and have lived in three countries. In the United States, we have lived in Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and New York and Utah.
We have both experienced racism. I regret to say the neither of us have experienced racism from conservative individuals, rather the greatest amount of bigotry and hatred we have experienced were from far left (pseudo-progressive €” actually regressive individuals who consider themselves enlightened an d Leftist African Americans. We have found that Africans who have migrated to the United States from Africa are usually far kinder and accepting than black and white folks who consider themselves progressive.

Did the US illegally or immorally take Hawaii? Probably. The same way that the Tahitian wave of Polynesians displaced/killed the original Marquesan colonists. As the Normans conquered/killed the English at about the same time. As the Romans conquered the Mediterranean world. Despite how history looks to use in hindsight, Texas will not be given back to the Comanches 140 years ago. Italy will not apologize for the conquest of Israel 2,000 years ago. The only way for us to rise above the madness is to tolerate, respect, and even to embrace each other’s cultures. There’s no other way.

I’m a fan. Small suggestion: use the wording “sight unseen” instead of “site-unseen.” You probably mean you came to Hawaii and started over there without ever having seen or been to Hawaii previously. Sight unseen. In some cases, “site-unseen” might refer to not ever having seen a website before, or viewed a site: physical property, but generally, saying “sight unseen” is what’s used in describing having never seen the place before, with one’s own eyes. Just a former book editor and newspaper editor (and copy editor) sounding off. Best wishes.

I hear you and like you I too am not happy with them changes that I’ve seen over the past 40 years. Though this article is positive, overall there is no one in Hawaii that has told more people that this place is not right for them.

This whole site is all about preserving your Tutu’s values and our way of life.

Im being priced out of my home my aina because of wreckless people like you telling others to move here. Im sick of it. If you say this place is the most awesome life changing place its because of the ALOHA that those born and raised here has. Or had I should say because honestly I have NO ALOHA left to spread. Its also apparently the shared feeling of many of my fellow natives and local people as you can see daily on the roads and in the news. I was raised to show and give ALOHA to everyone I meet, especially strangers because thats the Pono thing to do. Love and respect everyone, treat all with respect and the same will be returned. This is what my Tutu instilled in all her Mo’o puna(grandchildren). But i must say Im glad she’s home in heaven so she can see that all the life lessons and knowledge she passed onto us will continue through my generation. But also so she wouldnt have to see the new Hawaii the one where its more like Haole style where the style of living is hauna(stink) style. Ive spread my ALOHA only to be taken advantage of by my Haole neighbor who now owns 6 houses and I can only rent. SICKINING

I think even a lot of the tourists are going to find other places to go it’s getting too expensive to go so called Paradise

Comment on Top 3 reasons why you might think Hawaii locals in Hawaii are rude to you by Sarah P. https://www.livinginhawaii.com/living-in-hawaii/hawaiis-island-culture/are-locals-in-hawaii-rude/#comment-215052 Mon, 12 Jun 2023 00:58:17 +0000 https://www.livinginhawaii.com/?page_id=12728#comment-215052 We just visited Kauai and mainly stayed in the touristy areas. So we were fine. I found locals to be standoffish and sometimes just rude. We were always nice though. I’m of Asian descent, so I get the rudeness and suspicion. However, for an area that survives on tourists, you get more business if you are nice to people. Just sayin’……Also, who is considered pure anything anymore? People everywhere have been taken over by another group or another or inner marry etc. It is just better for people to quit being so tribalistic and just be kind to one another.
