Kyoto is not stunning. It is rather simple actually. AirBnB is illegal here. Gion is not affordable to most if you really want that experience.
18 Trips cruising around Japan since January 2020. Got the lingo down, know the country well.

Kyoto is stunning – but a definitely a tourist city. No way around it. With COVID it may be a bit less blood-thirsty – but anyway…;last time there (barely pre-COVID) we did an old AirBnB house in Enmachi. Traditional house and it worked well – and the local restaurants and shops were much more mellow than what we had experienced in Gion etc….

Do come to Hawaii….I see JAL has fights now.

That is interesting Preacher. But sad. Perhaps you know there are only around 5000 pure-blood Hawaiians left in the islands. That is the latest stat I have seen. And a large proportion of remaining Hawaiians would be living on Molokai, Lanai, and Niihau. So wave the flag for the Native Hawaiians – but so few of them are left – Hawaii needs, and is doing from what I see, taking large bits of wonderful Hawaiian culture that are so good and timeless – and making it part of the current culture. As they should. The ‘locals’ are almost always a mix…as you said. But unless they are drugged up (that is an issue we all know needs to be addressed) – the locals actually are easy to get along with, smiles and respect work both ways – we all got to live together, is a global aspiration. In truth, Hawaii does it better than any place I have been. And I have worked and lived all over the planet. Pat yourself on the back Hawaii. I can’t think of a better multi-racial society on our globe. The proof is in the pudding – the growing numbers of Hawaiian children who are the product of love and acceptance. They are the Hawaiian future.

Hi Greg, Please relax. I don’t think people are really planning on coming to Hawaii for a long time, as most understand the consequences. I really feel for the state of things there.

However, my wife and I have the same opinion about Japan. Please don’t travel here, especially if coming from America until this herds out, mutates out, or gets resolved.

It will be fixed. Humans are amazing animals, quite often stupid but many brilliant minds out there too.

Wear a mask, wash your hands and support your local restaurants with safe dining or take out.

Not in the middle of this Pandemic..Hello? Do you people understand that?? THATS THE POINT!! The last thing we need here is more crazy Covid BS and you bringing your bugs here to Hawaii. If you can’t understand that then you have NO business coming here, Nor do we want you here if you’re that selfish, plain and simple.
Another point for those wanting to come here now to visit are not thinking about us locals and you’re forced to 14 day quarantine, which means you stay in a room for 14days w minimal contact to others.

If you do come here thinking its OK to stay w friends or anyone else, think about this those that live in the home/house you’re intruding, the locals that work in a restaurant, bank, bar or any company w OTHER PEOPLE..GUESS WHAT? You just caused them to get LAID OFF due to YOU having to be quarantined!! So we lose our job because YOU want to move or just visit here. That’s just 2 big reasons to Stay There where you are and keep your bugs to yourself. Dont being it here!! Any questions, look up Aloha and the Consideration for Others!!

That’s the simple secret. You have to embrace the local culture – which is a beautiful one at that.

This place should be paradise, but instead it has become an over commercialized tourist tap. The government is run poorly and seems to be rife with corruption. Honolulu ( my home) is dirty, nasty, drug infested, and full of people who have lost hope of a better Hawaii. The largest population is not even Hawaiian, but rather Filipino. If you get hounded by “locals”, chances are they are immigrants, like most everyone else.
I immagine what these islands could have become if the Hawaiian people had been encouraged instead being “assimilated”. A place of modernity with more of a concentration on the preservation of nature. But, coulda, shoulda, woulda. It’s too late now.

I’ve not had any issues with locals “hating” on me. It’s been quite the opposite. I will tell you, though, that I treat the locals with the utmost respect and enjoy interacting with them… that goes a long way

Don’t fret about being a Haole and not welcome back. I travelled to Kyoto with my wife a few weeks back, and they sure were happy with my open wallet and credit cards. It will turn around. Be patient.
