Thank you for bringing up the horrible history behind the islands. More people need to educate themselves.

If you care about the acutal Native Hawaiian people, you will do your research before complaining that they’re prejudice. They seem them ALL as colonizers for fair reasons. Anyone who is offended shows their gnorance on the topic.

I’d like to stay in Oahu for one month to start, with my 9 pound little dog. Are there casitas or carriage houses to rent?

Thanks Kimberly, I don’t have information that Zillow and other search engines don’t already provide – sorry! I know finding a place to rent is a real problem. Have you looking into AirBnb for longer-term rental?

I’ve been looking at moving to the big island, the culture difference don’t bother me. I have been the minority to the Hispanic culture in my job for years. I work very hard at what I do but I am not educated so lower paying jobs are not a problem either.
What I haven’t found yet is housing, apartment rentals ect. Can you send me more information?
Thanks again
Kimberly

Hmm..I looked up the definition of racist and one’s skin color doesn’t exclude one from potentially being a racist.

Essentially, they share the same history as Black people in the States. By definition Hawaiians cannot be racist, maybe biased or discriminators but certainly not racist. I think white people don’t like what it feel like to be the minority on a land, make a big deal about it, and then try to call it racism. Look up the definition, people of color cannot be racist. But other than that thanks for the info.

I agree completely on the general idea of “mindset” but I don’t think most people knowingly consider their mindset as negative. Most people think of themselves in a positive light. Which is why more people move back to the mainland that move to Hawaii every year: people come here with positive mind sets full of hopes and dreams only to experience something very unexpected.

Much better than she negative reasons article. Everything is a mindset. Either you have a positive mindset or a negative mindset. I choose to have a positive mindset about Hawaii. Those who have a negative toxic mindset should not move here.

Thanks! After doing some research myself: it appears that East Hawaii on the Big Island is the least expensive area to buy. I entered “Puna” into sites like Zillow and Trulia and found tons of nice homes between 200k and 250k, some even come fully furnished, so the moving part is easy! What’s neat is that it’s still only a max 90 min drive to the touristy resort areas on the Kona side, though I’m attracted to the wilder coasts of Puna myself. I’ve also read that the population on Big Island is much less dense than on the other islands and they say that people really live with Aloha in Puna: open, friendly, no rush, respectful to all cultures, even seniors and us regular, not-wealthy folks. Sigh. I’m still working on the dream.

I grew up in Hispanic neighborhoods in the southwest and black neighborhoods on the east coast on the mainland and then moved to Hilo, Big Island, Hawaii when I was 11, in the early €˜80’s, and dealt with racism. I was one of five white kids in junior high. In ALL locations, my family was told to “go home”… ok, where is our home?€”we (white/mixed ethnic Europeans) have been displaced ourselves for so many more reasons than annexing…get it??????!!!! .I QUICKLY got sick of it (racism) at 12 yrs old and got into a huge fight. The other girl and me had detention together and I said I was sorry and she and her friends were civil in later years. I found that older local guys (yikes) loved to flirt with (little) me and that local girls left me alone if I held my head and was nonchalant. And my best friend was filipino. I lived on the mainland again for 20 years and then moved back to Hawaii in 2015 (for my teen true love who is local) and had ptsd for a good 9 months before it settled. My brother was set up and sent to prison. TRAUMA. Many more experiences which I saw others go through. Racism is global and calling anyone haole, spic, jap, chink, white trash, nigger etc and being segregated and hated on for any of the same reasons HURTS. White people today are not responsible for OTHER white peoples’ mistakes past or present, anymore than a person with a darker skin tone is responsible for anyone of the same tone’s actions or words or for our mostly Caucasian government mistakes. Racism hurts ALL WAYS. Truth in love

We don’t observe daylight savings time in Hawai’i. Winter sunset is 5:30, summer is 6:45 to 7:15.

I’m glad someone said this. Kudos to you. No one should move here on a lark. Many who do this end up homeless within one year. Homelessness is a huge problem here on O’ahu. Yes, there are plenty of jobs, but the salaries are no good, with the high cost of rent or mortgage, & day to day living. Too many people in Honolulu make for choking traffic with nowhere to park. Outer islands get traffic now too. If I was wealthy, & could live anywhere, it would be Moloka’i island. Moloka’i is the most Hawaiian of all da islands. No traffic, few tourists, slow lifestyle, impossible beauty & romance. Few jobs in Moloka’i though. There are three classes there: Independently wealthy, those who eek out a living doing whatever, & the rest on welfare &/or homeless. My best advice for those of you seeking better weather & opportunity… Try Florida, Hawai’i is full already.

This is the source and it is accurate, even in June it sets at 7pm:
https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/usa/honolulu?month=6

In Spain for instance sun sets at 10pm in June and in December it sets at 6pm:
https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/spain/cadiz?month=6

Sunset at 6 is ok if you plan on going to sleep at 8pm and get up at 5am but doubt many people do that …although maybe they do in Hawaii, having read on your other list of “12 reasons why not to move to hawaii” how terrible traffic is over there.

Where did you get that from? We get 13 hours of daylight in summer and 11 hrs of daylight in Winter. Midwest by comparison gets 15 hrs daylight in summer and 9 hrs of daylight in Winter. It just depends what your preference is. If your sun sets at 9pm in summer it sets at 4pm in Winter.

No magic way other than tracking flights through Google, etc but if you’re thinking of relocating and expensive airfare is going to “break” you, Hawaii will probably be far too expensive if you want to maintain your current lifestyle.

hello, I want to absolutely THANK YOU. my hubby is waiting to hear IF he got a job there working for the new monorail, so Ive done a lil looking into people’s comments I read one last night, it was so bad a d neg. It scared to maybe NOT want to move or have second thoughts but your article turned me right back to being excited to go, only thing that’s bothers me at this point is getting my cats there I keep reading how hawiian people are not real animal lovers, I myself saved a bat I hit w my car wen I grew up in northern cali. my parents moved us from Santa Clara to lake camanche, outside of Sacramento, not a burb, it’s over an hour away, I grew up on water skis parasailing, boating, Etc. and a horse, I grew up on 43 acres absolutely loved it!! I NEVER wore shoes accept to school, they callused so I cud walk hot tar, rocks, through fields everything barefoot, I lived a casual TomBoy life that I miss SO much and you described everything I wish for now, I went on vacation there three years ago in honolulu, Cried wen I had to leave other than missed hubby. I worked dor Kaiser in my adult years again LOVED IT! greatest company I ever worked for and want to maybe go back, if hubby gets job w ur new light rail. im ‘on a plane, I’ve been told so many things have protective coating put on cars cuz my father in law paid it OFF for me wen the economy Took a huge hit in 08, so NO WAY can I get rid of it, we lost dad to pancreatic cancer cpl years ago. so it very sentimental to me, the company said they have a moving package they offer to new hires for obvious reasons, so I will take full advantage of that, BUT.. I JUST BOUGHT A BEAUTIFUL 2011 avalanche that I also just got attached to, other than my vehicles in a junkie fot cars ill admit, but we going to sell all our other vehicles etc. want to start over, new furniture so we can downsize except guest room/ btw im purchasing ur book soon as I submit this to you, but I have a huge fear of bugs geckos,? no big deal, but read about how cetipedes can get as big as snakes and can bite he said living in Hawii at some point in your life there one will roll over one while ur sleeping n get bit. id die, cuz im not a snake person so reading that Hawaii doesn’thave them is so amazing to me, walking barefoot in north cali. was to b alert 24/7 I was VERY fortunate, But as a young teen was bit by a black widow that put me in an E.r. w my tongue swelled to block my airway. so im not scared of black widows I just not fond of spiders, geckos I wud prolly feed one if it were cute enough, but id train my cats not to get them. I had a parakeet I trained them to ignore their natural intinct to want to kill it, they getting old, no real desire to chase anything. except something that may walk across their foot or something, but long story short I had a stroke and my cat got me through that, time during having it, they all curled up around my head n slept around me, so I’m in love w them had them for 8 years and CANNOT part w them, realtors told me we won’t b able to get a rental even for cpl months wen we move there, just till we buy a house. because of my pets and even some associations have strict rules to qty. size etc. they have Never NOT used their litter box they r good girls, and yes im I’m aware and am preparing them for their shots etc. so they won’t get quarantined. for 4 months. they’ve never been exposed to anything to get Rabies, but I totally understand! there’s no rabies been documented there ever? which is crazy since there are bats there aren’t there? idk just rambling so talking to someone / w positive outlook, please tell me about these “centipedes that live in damp places in your home, nesting under carpets, usually near kitchens” this fella was so neg. I just don’t know if he was trying to keep population down or what, he talked about the tsunamis that Hawaii gets allot of! & people die cuz they looking at sea life stuck on sand beach cuz waster pulls out first, unaware of huge waves coming back that are like 4-6 story waves return drowning all those “unaware people”.. I noticed and agreed w u about friendly people, I sropped and chatted w so many people it was amazing how nice n laid back it is there!! Mn. folks stay away.lol
ok long enough gotra fo pur hase book now,
MAHALO, AND GOD BLESS FOR ALL INFO YOU HAVE SUPPLIED! you seem very kind!

warm regards, aloha

Hawaii is ranked dead last in public education when compared to the other states. The DOE in Hawaii is so terrible that I would not advise anyone to raise kids there unless private schooling can be afforded.

Hi Olive,

Honestly, and you’re not going to like this, stick around where you are and graduate from high school first. Stay around your friends, the area you know and feel comfortable in. Your parents are right to be concerned about the racism. Not that it’s bad for adults, but I think for kids it is MUCH worse. Why don’t you find some kids in Hawaii and ask them? Use twitter, facebook, whatever, wherever kids are – instagram? I don’t know. I do think they’ll tell you that there is a ton of racism and the real problem for your family moving is that YOU won’t be happy, you may not fit in quickly to one of the groups…

So, I’d recommend against it actually. Sorry. I would NOT bring my daughter there. I have considered it over a couple of years, she is 5 now. I think better to stay in Thailand, or maybe we might go to another country in Asia. Much better environment for her.

Aloha!

Vern

I am a kid living in California, but not on the coast. I’m stuck in the central valley. I learned how to surf when I was around 6, and its my favorite thing in the world. My dad surfs also so we try to go every 2 weeks or so since we are about 3 hours from Santa Cruz. I have been trying to convince my parents to move for about 2 years now, and its always “been a possibility” but my parents always give me lists of reasons why we couldn’t. My Dad would love to, but he just doesn’t really think about it realistically. I’m one of those people that kinda just thinks that life is short and you have to make the most of it, and I’m not looking to waste 18 years of it in the central valley. I’m trying to write a persuasive essay about why we should move, but I cant really think of any other than the obvious. I actually am open to moving anywhere where you can surf, but my top pick is definitely Hawaii. Some of my parents main concerns about Hawaii are the costs and the locals being racist towards white people (my family being blond haired and blued eyed). Is the racism that bad? Also what are some convincing reasons for parents. Also is it safe there?
Thanks so much.

On the mainland, it is a challenge today, hail the USA….the mainland is hectic and changed so much I don’t recognize this country anymore. Perhaps Hawaii is different and more friendly, as friendliness seems to have vanished on the mainland. And now the TPP is going in, more jobs gone, no matter what they say. We have toured around Kauai, and we are thinking of checking out Maui as well. We are looking for 2-3 acres with lots of bamboo and fruit trees. We like the convenience of shopping centers, but want to stay far enough away from the crowd. We enjoy the view of beach, but we are not beach bums. Any suggestions where we should look in Maui?

I only have my disability allowance, which is not much. Are there resources VA etc that would help me to live even simply in Hawaii?

We are wanting to come and explore all of Maui and understand the island
completely as we are hoping to purchase there this summer. Can you suggest a great relator for us?

Hi Lee,

Sounds like you’re probably going. Best of luck to you! There are hundreds of articles here, indexed at the home page. You could start there. I also have a book on the topic – you can read it for free by signing up to join the newsletter. Aloha!

My wife is the executive director at her place of business and has 2 semesters left in school to have her Cpa. Me, well, I would just have to look for work. We plan on searching for a house that has solar power, several fruit trees, etc etc..we will grow our own vegetables, make milk from coconuts and live as self sufficient as possible. Do you have any tips as far as making the move, safest areas, great schools for 3 kids? I know there are negatives but then again where are there not negatives? We live in MS and can think of way more negative than positive. Thanks in advance!

You really nailed it! I absolutely love Hawaii. As a travel writer, I seldom visit the same place more than once because there are so many other places to, but Hawaii is the exception.

Already, two people wrote to tell me that I’m painting too rosy a picture of the place. WHY? They want to keep Hawaii for their own.

The title of the article says it all – these are all POSITIVES about living in the most amazing state in the USA. We all understand there are negatives. I won’t be posting them here in the comments.

Aloha!

Naive? The article is what it is – reasons TO MOVE TO Hawaii. I have mentioned PLENTY of negatives about moving to the islands in dozens of articles before. I’m sure people don’t read this and think to themselves, MY GOD! IT’s the most perfect place to ever exist on the earth! Move along now… nothing to see here… lol.

It glosses over so many topics and ignores the most relevant ones such as the extremely high cost of living, poor wages and extremely high housing costs. A better suggestion is to visit Hawaii but not live there!

Yeah, there are some amazing things about Thailand too for sure Jon! In some ways, Hawaii cannot compare to Thailand – right? But, I think there are more ways that Thailand can, in no way, compare to Hawaii! Both great places though!

Ill say 98% of the list I can vouch for except the mai tai and the marijuana one. Both I never tried before so I don’t know about them and cant vouch anything about them. If we could mix Hawaiis lifestyle into the lifestyle in Thailand, I would truly say I was in heaven!
