I received a note from a woman that has a pretty good idea what her and her husband want when they move to the island of Maui. Her note is below, and my response is below that.<\/span>* * *<\/p>\n

Hi Vern! Thanks for the great info you post on moving to HI. My husband and I are considering a move for retirement but would like to purchase in the next year or so due to interest rates, etc.<\/p>\n

We love Maui when we vacation but it gets very congested in the tourist areas. We wold like a little more quiet if possible. We’re thinking about $1-1.5M and would want great ocean views. Also we like to go to see movies. I would prefer a 20 minute or less drive to basic shopping but I would also like a little bigger lot size. We enjoy spots bars and nice casual dining. Other than that we’re pretty boring. Just hikes, walks and quiet time.<\/p>\n

I think you are asking about quiet places on Maui, not to move to another island. If you like Maui, you likely should stay there. I also like the vibe on Maui!<\/p>\n

It gets pretty crowded at all the tourist areas on all the islands, so that’s something that will be a constant. Better not to live there though. There are three main tourist areas on Maui – Kihei, Ka’anapali and Lahaina. Personally, I’m with you, I wouldn’t live in any of those areas either. They are too crowded.<\/p>\n

So where to go? Way west is my preference. Past Ka’anapali is “way out west” and it’s a nice place, a great place, to live. Looking at the map, it’s actually North of Lahaina and Ka’anapali. I think you can pick something up for $1.5M with great ocean views in the Honokowai \/ Kahana \/ Napili areas. I’ll check the listings in a minute. When I lived on Maui I stayed in Honokowai. I stayed on Mahinahina Street which was a very short walk from the beach, maybe 80 meters? There are houses all along the hill, and it’s a beautiful place to get away from the tourists and nuttiness going on in say, South Kihei.<\/p>\n
